Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kampala and Transfer to Mount Elgon National Park.
- Arrival & Transfer to Mount Elgon: On day 1 of your 5 Days Sipi Falls Hike, our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kampala City. You will then drive to Mbale where you will stopover for lunch and later embark on a four-hour hike to the Khauka caves. Alternatively, you can go to the viewpoint through Nabuyoga loop where you can see Jackson summit and Wagagi peak situated on Mount Elgon.
- Upon your arrival at the park, check into your lodge for dinner and accommodation.
Day 2: Guided Nature Walks.
- Guided Nature Walks: After a hearty breakfast at your lodge, meet up with your guide and drive to Kapkwai Forest Exploration Center for one of the many guided nature walks. You can combine the 7-kilometer bamboo trail hike to Kapkwai Cave with the 3-kilometer ridge trek to the beautiful Chebonet Falls. Alternatively, you can take the full-day hike moving through tropical bamboo forests to the Tutum Cave. You will see primates, birds and wonderful flora such as the Elgon tik and Elgon olive.
- Later return back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Sipi Falls Hike.
- Sipi Falls Hike: Wake up early in the morning and have breakfast at your lodge. You will then head out for a long or short community walk to Sipi Falls, depending on how energetic you are feeling. The lowest of these waterfalls is the most spectacular as it cascades over a 100m cliff. The second, known as Simba, plunges 69m over the entrance to a cave. Visitors can stand in the cave and enjoy a view of the back of the falls. The third waterfall, also known as Ngasire, gushes over an 87m high ridge. For a different view of this magnificent cascade, you can try abseiling alongside the first waterfall. Keen anglers can try their hand at fishing at the third waterfall.
- Later drive back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Coffee Tour or Budadiri Hike.
- Coffee Tour: Have your morning cup of tea and later head out for a tour of some of the coffee farms in the area. Discover the local culture! Visit the Sipi Widows Group for a guided walk around the coffee plantation as you learn how to plant coffee, pick, grind, store, and clean the coffee beans.
- Along the way, you will get to interact with the locals in the area, learn more about the life of the Sabiny people and participate in traditional weaving. You can also take African cooking demonstrations which will give you the chance to prepare and taste traditional dishes.
- Budadiri Hike (Optional): Alternatively, you may hike from Budadiri to the Mudange cliffs, known as the “walls of death”, at the boundary of Mount Elgon National Park. Later head back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5: Transfer back to Kampala.
- Transfer back to Kampala: Have your breakfast at leisure and check out of your lodge. Drive back to Kampala city with lunch enroute to the capital. Once you arrive in Kampala, your guide can drop you off at any hotel of your choice with an optional of a half-day city tour if you wish. Alternatively, directly at Entebbe International Airport in time to check-in and board your flight back home.
