Exploring the Cultural Richness of East and Southern Africa
This can be seen more evidently in the East and Southern parts of Africa, in the diverse cultures and lifestyles. This region is indeed a special one given that it relishes the twin combination of the old and the new and as much as its development is an essential factor, it is even more so the numerous reasons that make this region one of the best places to visit. Here, we will learn more about the culture of East and Southern Africa from the enhancement of the day-to-day life to the set and developing norms and values that make it worthwhile to visit the region.
The rich culture of the African people.
The different cultures of Africa, given the fact that it is made up of 54 countries, each with its own culture, are therefore part of history. Throughout the ages, man has inhabited the East African region and the cultures of the early societies in the region had to come up with ways and means of passing their messages across. Music and dance are some of the most important aspects of the African culture today and in the past; they express sorrow and joy, and also educate young and old on the cultures and myths of the community. In this way and many more, the East African communities have found a way of identifying themselves through music and dance.

Kenya: Melting or a Mosaic of Cultures?
For instance, there is Kenya with about 300 different ethnic groups. Each has its own historical background and social organization and each one has found its own way of doing things that sets it apart. Most of the traditional performances in the East African region are characterized by singing, and the response form and they all entail the use of rhythm.
The Languages of East Africa.
It must be noted that the linguistic diversity of Africa is simply unparalleled. Over 2000 different languages are spoken in the continent alone and different cultures, traditions and art forms are related with those languages. Of all the aspects of the African countries, I felt the richness of the languages most of all on the East African coast. During my first time in Zanzibar an island in Tanzania, I remember feeling like I was in a different Swedish-speaking world. The slightly sing-song way that people spoke in the local Swahili dialect was how I envisioned the world in the near future would sound if languages continued to evolve as they have over time. In coastal Tanzania and in small parts of northern Mozambique, they are employing an archaic language to be the initial in the world to converse with a normal voice on the street, to create a switch from a tongue-like sound to a normal one in monophonic conversation.
Traditional Attire:
Clothing in Africa is not just a basic need because it has the ability to define one’s personality and that of the society they find themselves in. In East Africa, two types of garments are very popular: the kanga and kitenge are a type of cloth used by Swahili women. The kanga is a piece of coloured material usually with a saying or a message written on it. It looks like Kitenge but it is usually brighter and at times it may have a semi-gloss finish. Both wrap around women and men when they decide to wear a single garment. The shape is elongated and this allows the wearer to use it in a creative way and to also express something about them and to wrap it around different parts of the body. Two pan-African “groups” of women are famous for their beautiful wraps. One wears it around the upper part of the body as if it is a top while the other one wears it around the lower part of the body like a skirt.
A trip through the culinary traditions of Africa.
Like the cultures and people of Africa, the food in Africa is diverse; Africans have a multitude of delectable dishes to share with the world. Thus, Zambia is a coastal country and this has made it possible to provide a large choice of seafood in the restaurants of Zanzibar. seafood which has been prepared in the traditional manner with the Arab, Indian and even the Portuguese influence, one can taste a unique blend of the seafood obtained in Zanzibari restaurants to the present day. However, for those who are used to the braai (barbecue) or the ten dinner rolls choices in a Zambian restaurant then the options available in Zanzibar may seem a little strange. Mezze, tandoori and a great variety of other appetizers as well as seafood are offered in almost every restaurant and at so-called doorway dinners that take place right on the streets of Stone Town.
Festivals: Celebrating Culture; The African Way.
Africa with its great cultural diversity is truly an interesting continent. Some may know about its art and craft but how many know about its festivals and how it represents art and craft through them? Tanzania’s ambience for instance cannot be compared to any other regardless of the perspective one wishes to take. The Sauti za Busara festival in Zanzibar which this travelogue mentioned in Kinship Productions’ “Kenya to the Cape” celebration of African music opened the eyes of many people who watched it. The festival was not only an electrifying entertainment platform to unveil the unknown and the contemporary appeal of African music but also a celebration of the importance of African’s diverse nature, life, and language.
