Mount Nyiragongo
Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano located in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is also among the top active volcanoes in the world. The mountain stands at a height of 3,470 meters above sea level and is part of the volcanic mountains in the Virunga Massif. It is situated 20km north of Goma town and Lake Kivu. The mountain can easily be accessed by tourists travelling from Kigali city since it borders Rwanda to the west.

The mountain first erupted in 1977 following the rupture of the crater walls holding the lava lake. The entire lava lake drained out just within 30 minutes, releasing about 5 million cubic meters of lava towards the north, south and western part of the mountain.
The eruption on Mount Nyiragongo caused devastating damage to many homesteads of people living within close proximity to the mountain. It is reported that the lava flows from mount Nyiragongo reached Goma within 20 minutes and killing about 300 people.
In 2002, there was a volcanic eruption on the mountain, killing several people and destroying a large part of Goma. This displayed a lot of Congolese who were residing in Goma, and thus created a huge refugee crisis. However, there are no eruptions that have occurred on the mountain since the 2002 event.
