What are Nature Walks?

Wildlife conservation awareness is rising across the globe, and more and more people are opting to spend some time outside enjoying the fresh air and taking in the beauty of the natural world around them. This has led to a huge increase in the popularity of nature walks and wildlife-watching activities around the world. Rwanda is no exception to this – and there are lots of fantastic nature walks available throughout the country that provide a fantastic glimpse into the amazing biodiversity that can be found at each of the different national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Rwanda. Although you can’t go wrong by choosing any of the parks for a nature walk, there are two that really stand out as being among the best in the country;

The first of these is the Volcanoes National Park which is located in the northwest of the country close to the border with Uganda. The park is home to nine of the eleven volcanoes that can be found in Rwanda as well as a wide variety of other wildlife including leopards, monkeys, elephants, buffaloes and antelopes. It is also one of the few places where you can see the rare mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. For this reason, it is one of the most popular places to visit Rwanda for both tourists and locals alike.

The second of the best places for nature walks in Rwanda is the Akagera National Park which is located in the east of the country near the border with Tanzania. This is a smaller park than Volcanoes National Park but it offers a similar range of wildlife viewing opportunities. These include lions, zebras, crocodiles, hippos, elephants and giraffe. There are also two lakes within the park that offer superb birdwatching opportunities with a range of species including pelicans, flamingos and herons.

However, it’s not just the two national wildlife parks where you can enjoy some fabulous nature walks in Rwanda – there are several others which are well worth a visit too. They include the Rwenzori Mountains National Park which offers some excellent hiking and walking trails through the foothills of the Rwenzoris as well as the Nyungwe Forest National Park in the south of the country which is home to the endangered chimpanzee.

Whichever of these parks you choose to visit for your nature walk in Rwanda, you are bound to have a wonderful experience and provide you with memories that will last a lifetime.
