Rwanda Wildlife Animals List: Rwanda is famously known as ‘’the Land of a Thousand Hills’’ and is undoubtedly one of the most exceptional wildlife spots in Africa. 4. Other Big Mammals
Giraffes
Giraffes rank Akagera National Park among the most elegant animals of the park. Their main food sources are acacia trees, and they can be seen moving in small groups on the open savannahs.
Zebras
Plains zebras are one of the most familiar species in Akagera and can easily be identified by their unique black and white stripes. They usually feed on antelopes and wildebeests.
Hippopotamuses
Hippos can be seen in lakes and rivers. Their Favorite Lake for this is Lake Ihema, located in Akagera. They usually stay in the water all day and come out at night for food.
Crocodiles
Nile crocodiles live in the wetlands and lakes of Rwanda. Being strong reptiles, they are one of the main predators of the aquatic ecosystem.
5.Antelope Species
Rwanda is home to a great variety of antelope species, especially in Akagera National Park:
- Impala: The most common of all antelopes that is famous for its quickness and nimbleness.
- Topi: Large antelope mainly living on the grassland.
- Waterbuck: A water-loving animal that is usually seen around water bodies.
- Bushbuck: A forest-dwelling antelope that stays away from people.
- Duikers: The smallest antelopes that mainly live in the forests.

6. Primates Beyond Gorillas and Chimpanzees

7. Small Mammals and Nocturnal Animals
Rwanda’s rich ecosystems have been home to a variety of small mammals, including hyenas, jackals, servals, mongooses, porcupines, genets, and bush babies. Most of these creatures can be spotted during night safaris.
8. Birdlife in Rwanda
Rwanda is a haven for bird lovers; to date, more than 700 bird species have been recorded there.
Main birds among others are:
- Grey crowned crane (national bird)
- African fish eagle
- Shoebill Stork
- Kingfishers
- Hornbills
- Turacos
- Sunbirds

9. Reptiles and Amphibians
Among others, Rwanda’s wetlands and forests shelter a variety of reptiles and amphibians such as Snakes (pythons, cobras, vipers), Lizards, Frogs, and toads. These animals play a vital role in maintaining the environment and biodiversity.
Conservation and Wildlife Protection
