Virunga Mountains in Rwanda
Virunga Mountains in Rwanda can be found in Volcanoes national park, a park famous for housing half of the world’s remaining endangered mountain gorillas that can be seen along the different slopes of the Virunga Mountains in the park. MOUNT KARISIMBI
Mount Karisimbi is the highest mountain in Rwanda and the highest among the virunga mountains in Rwanda with an elevation of 4507 metres above sea level. The mountain has a number of rewarding attractions and experiences that can be seen when they participate in a number of activities along the mount slopes during the hike. At the different trails of the mountain, they will get the chance to see a number of attractions; like the different bird species like; red-faced woodland warbler, Ruwenzori double collared sunbird, Collared Apalis, Ruwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, strange weaver, Archer’s ground robin, red-faced woodland warbler.
While hiking mount karisimbi, you will get the chance to see the Karisoke research centre where Dian Fossey used to carry out her research on the mountain gorillas while in the park before she was murdered, still on the mountain you will see the karisimbi gorilla family and Susa gorilla family which was then studied by Dian Fossey. MOUNT MUHABURA
Among the different Virunga Mountains in Rwanda, Mountain Muhabura is the third highest in the park which will give you rewarding experiences when you carry out the hike on the mountain. The mountain is not only found in volcanoes national park but also Mgahinga National Park which is also another interesting fact about the mountain. The mountain is also the steepest mountain which can be a little straining for lazy hikers therefore if you’re interested in hiking the Virunga Mountains in the park, you should put in mind the nature of the mountain.
During the hike on the mountain, you will get to see the Amahoro gorilla family among the Rwanda gorilla families that can be seen in the park. Mount Muhabura can be hiked at both the Ugandan starting from Ntebeko reception area where it easier to hike and from the Rwandan side it can start from Kinigi reception area but regardless where you carry out the hike from, you will have an amazing time as you see a number of attractions like the numerous bird species like Ruwenzori turaco, road throated alethe, kivu ground thrush, Ruwenzori dark collared sun bird, mountain sparked Apalis, Regal Sunbird, stripe breasted tit, the golden monkey species, you will also see the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo among other attractions in the park
MOUNT SABYINYO
Just like Mountain Karisimbi, Mount sabyinyo is also another mountain to hike among the virunga mountains in Rwanda. Interesting about the mountain is the fact that its peak lies within three countries Uganda, Congo and Rwanda which is considered the centre of the Virunga Mountains. The mountain is hard to hike but once hiked; you will get exceptional views of the different vegetation cover like the bamboo, where you can find the golden monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, Dent’s monkey, a number of animal species like elephants, buffaloes, the forest elephants. You will also have rewarding experiences through the rugged terrain of the mountain where you will see the Sabyinyo gorilla family and the Hirwa gorilla family among other attractions.
Mountain Gahinga
Mount Gahinga is also among the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda where you will get the opportunity to see a number of attractions while carrying out the Gahinga Mountain hike. The mountain is the smallest among the different virunga mountains in Rwanda that tourists can visit to have an amazing time while in the park. While hiking Mount Gahinga, you will get the chance to see exceptional views for photography like the caldera at the summit of the mountain where you will see a number of attractions like the bamboo trees can are also a habitat for numerous bird species like Ruwenzori turaco, road throated alethe, kivu ground thrush, Ruwenzori dark collared sun bird, mountain sparked Apalis, Regal Sunbird, stripe breasted tit, the golden monkeys among other attractions in the park.
MOUNTAIN BISOKE
Mount Bisoke is another mountain among the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda that tourists can get to hike during their Rwanda tour to have an amazing time while you visit Rwanda. The mount is where Dian fossey established her Karisoke Research Centre during her visit in the park as she carried out research on the mountain gorillas in the park. Hiking mount Bisoke can be carried out in Rwanda and when you visit Congo.
Among the primate species that can be seen while on the hike, include the Mountain Gorillas, Golden Monkeys and other monkey species that can be seen in the bamboo trees and you will also get to see the animal species in the park like bushbucks, Elephants, Buffaloes waterbucks and many more. You will also have the chance to see a crater lake at the summit of the mountain where you can carry out picnics, photography which will offer a memorable experience during your tour in volcanoes national park.
Aside from the different Virunga Mountains in Rwanda, there are other virunga mountains that can be seen in the Democratic Republic of Congo like Mount Nyamuragira and Mount Mikeno that can be found in Virunga National Park; You will get to see the world’s largest lava lake on top of Mount Nyiragongo which is one of Africa’s most active mountain, mount Nyamuragira which is the most active mountain in Africa and mount Mikeno where you will get to see a number of Congo gorilla families and numerous chimpanzees among other primate species
