Mikeno Mist Lodge

This luxurious lodge is situated in the midst of the forested Virunga National Park in Congo. It was first opened in August 2011 to tourists visiting the national park.

Mikeno Mist Lodge in Congo has 12 individual bungalows that offer nothing but the best services and comfort to its guests. Each of the bungalows at the lodge can accommodate a maximum of 2 people, offering both double and twin beds.

The rooms are spacious and feature amenities such as; large double/ twin beds, a fireplace and comfortable sitting area. The bathrooms are well kept with a separate bath and shower; as well as having hot water running at an excellent pressure.

The main area of Mikeno mist lodge contains a gift shop, bar, large fire pit, restaurant and a beautiful terrace.

The lodge offers its guests services such as; a well-stocked bar and lounge, cosy restaurant that serves guests spectacular and delicious meals, a fire place to keep warm during cold days and nights, free breakfast, free ample and secure parking and Wi-Fi internet.

Visitors staying at Mikeno mist lodge in Congo can engage in gorilla trekking activities in Virunga national park. Trekking mountain gorillas in Virunga national park costs a fee of USD 400 dollars per person; plus, the activity is not as physically challenging as gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable national park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

Visiting Orphaned Mountain Gorillas at Senkwekwe Sanctuary.

Mikeno mist lodge in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a 10 minutes’ walk to the Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage Centre. The Centre is the only place in the world where a tourist will find mountain gorillas in captivity. 

It is at the Senkwekwe Sanctuary where about 6 orphaned mountain gorillas are taken care of by a team of experienced and well trained staff and primate doctors; following the death of their primate parents. The 6 orphaned gorillas looked after at this centre are; Maisha, Matabishi, Yalala, Kaboko, Ndeze and Ndakasi.

Tourists staying at Mikeno Lodge can pay a visit to the Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage centre for free. However, guests staying at the lodge have to give prior notice to the management at Virunga National Park, in case they wish to visit the centre.

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience:

Guests staying at the lodge can also take part in chimpanzee habituation experience which is done in the tropical, Afro-montane forest in Virunga National Park in Congo. Chimpanzee habituation experience is free for any tourist staying at the lodge.

Tracking starts at 6am with a maximum of 4 people tracking a group of chimpanzees. Tourists are also limited to spending only an hour with the chimpanzees.

Hiking to Mount Nyiragongo:

Mikeno mist lodge in Congo is at the centre of two main tourist attractions which are; the mountain gorillas and Mount Nyiragongo. This makes the lodge an ideal spot for accommodation spot for tourists who wish to do gorilla trekking or hiking the Nyiragongo volcano. 

Guests staying at the lodge can make a booking with Virunga National Park, to embark on a hiking trip to the summit of Nyiragongo. Hiking expeditions to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo gives visitors spectacular views of the boiling molten lava lake.

Other activities that guests staying at Mikeno Lodge can take part in include; gorilla trekking, bird watching, nature walks; all of which can be done in Virunga National Park.

How to get to Mikeno Mist Lodge in Congo.

Mikeno mist lodge is just a 90 minutes’ drive away from Goma town. The lodge is located in Rumangabo district in the province of Kivu; in the democratic republic of Congo. The lodge is located near the headquarters to Virunga National Park. The Senkwekwe Centre for orphaned mountain gorillas is just a 10 minute walk from Mikeno Lodge and thus tourists can visit the centre on a daily basis if they wish.

Travellers can also access the lodge by road from Kigali, driving through Gisenyi and crossing the border at ‘Grande Barrier’, and then driving to Rumangabo into DR Congo.  The road leading to Rumangabo from Goma is approximately 46 km.
